Dressing a Thick Waist
Help! I need some suggestions for casual wear. I have broad shoulders, short waisted/no waist, a fat tummy and long legs. Hips and behind are average for being 38 years old and female.
Sounds like you and I are shaped very much alike! I've found a couple of things that create the illusion of a more defined waist and a smaller stomach. I really like boot cut pants that sit just below the waist, like the ones from Banana Republic. They're very flattering, even when you have a top tucked in (though I often wear a hip-length or longer top untucked over pants and skirts, especially when I'm retaining water).
Tops with shirring on the sides (lots of drawstring tops out right now--the drawstrings run up and down the sides rather than around the bottom, and create the illusion of a waist). I also have found that princess cut dresses, with the "waist" right under the bust and a slight A-line skirt are very flattering.
What kinds of things can I wear, I have slim legs and a thick, thick waist and a medium upper body, how do I get past the spare tire to look decent?? Help!!
A princess-seamed or trapeze-style dress, which has the seam or "waist" right under the bust will play up your bust and flare out over your waist, covering it. You can also wear straight tunics (not too oversized--you don't want to look lost, just have it skim over your body.
I also really like the look of an oversized buttondown shirt tucked into low-waisted pants, which put more emphasis on your hips and less on your waist (my waist is a little thicker than I'd like, too, so I use this trick a lot.) Banana Republic makes great lower cut pants.
Play up your legs in shorter skirts, wear pencil skirts with heels, and play with pattern and color--use them to draw attention to your legs and away from your midsection.
Hope this helps!
My chest & hips are are 1X while my waist is a 4x. What styles should I be wearing for casual & dress. I have lost 30lbs but hardly any from waist so now my waist is bigger than my chest & hips.
First of all, congratulations on losing 30 pounds--that is no small achievement! I've been struggling to lose weight myself and it is hard.
As for what to wear, your focus should be on creating visual balance. Look for styles that play up your shoulders--jackets and tops with small shoulder pads, detailing at the shoulders, boatneck necklines, etc.. For pants and skirts, look for boot-cut pants and skirts with an A-line or wider flare--both these looks will create visual balance and draw attention away from your waist. And keep at it--sounds like you're doing great!
Sorry for the delayed response; I'm starting a new business and it's keeping me running.
