Rules for editing your closet abound. Here are some favorites, along with some of the thinking behind them.

If you haven't worn it in a year, get rid of it.

If something's been hanging in your closet for a year and you haven't worn it, chances are that you won't. There are exceptions, of course--pregnancy puts virtually your entire wardrobe on hold for at least that long, and any classic piece of evening wear might go a year or two without an occasion to wear it.

But for the most part, if you have a shirt or skirt or dress or pants that have been hanging in your closet for that long and you haven't had the inclination to wear it, chances are that you won't. So ditch it.
