Fabric shoes like mules and espadrilles are favorites in summer, but their life span tends to be short--often just one season. While this makes them a great, inexpensive way to indulge in the fad of the moment, keeping them fresh for their intentionally short life takes special care.

Keep Them Dry

Water can ruin the shape of fabric shoes and cause them to fade or the colors to run. If they do get wet, stuff them with white tissue paper and let them air dry away from heat and sunlight.

Clean Them Regularly

The no-water rule also means you shouldn't throw your fabric shoes into the washing machine. Have your drycleaner or shoe repair shop clean them instead--or do it yourself with a soft towel and a special cleaning fluid such as Afta. Avoid spot-cleaning, as this can result in uneven color.

Protect Them

Stain and water-resistant sprays keep dirt and water from penetrating the fabric of your delicate shoes, and prolongs their life. Take a few minutes to apply it when you first get your shoes and you'll get more wear out of them.
