1. Have a Reason.

Don't buy it if you don't need it, or it'll end up hanging in your closet and being given away with the tags still attached. Or, you'll end up buying more things to go with it, and not wear those, either. The exception--if you truly love something, buy it, even if you have no idea where you'll wear it. The opportunity will present itself.

2. Don't Wait for Sales

I don't always agree with this one, because shopping sales is one of the great sources of serendipity in building a wardrobe. But if you're looking for a particular piece and find something you truly love, buy it. If you wait for a sale in these cases, your size and color will inevitably be gone by the time there's a sale. And when you really love something, buy two. They wear out.

3. Come Packing

Buying shoes to go with a dress? Bring the dress, and try the whole ensemble on together. This will cut way down on return trips to take back something that didn't work after all. Also, if there's a particular item you're looking for, bring the picture you found in the magazine.

4. Dress to Shop

Dress both comfortably and stylishly, in things that are easy to change in and out of. You'll feel better, and you'll get better service, too.
