These were the items I actually used from a less overpacked suitcase on a recent business trip. Even though suits were required each of the three business days, I still got everything into one mid-sized suitcase and a small carryon.

I've also included a list of outfits and occasions for the more formal trip's pieces, so you can see how they all work together, and why you really don't need to pack more.

  Fall/Winter Clothing List--Formal Business Attire
black three piece suit (jacket, boot-cut pants, short slim skirt)
brown silk/wool pantsuit
dark rinse jeans
black stretchy travel pants (wide legged, elastic waist, wrinkleproof)
black short leather jacket
black silk cardigan sweater
black ribbed silk turtleneck, long-sleeved
heavy black ribbed turtleneck sweater
heavy grey ribbed turtleneck sweater
black sleeveless ribbed mock turtleneck
red sleeveless ribbed mock turtleneck
ribbed light purple turtleneck
white long-sleeved bodysuit
black thick microfiber tights
mid-heel black leather ankle boots
rubber soled, square-toed high heels (they look like duck feet, but....)
black loafers with zebra print inset
